WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A record-breaking year for the film industry in North Carolina put Wilmington back on the map for everyone from comic book fans to Nicholas Sparks fans searching for a good old-fashion love story.
It's been a blockbuster year for Hollywood East with the filming of the Marvel blockbuster "Iron Man 2" soaring into town over the summer. The colossal flick brought A-list stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow to Wilmington. Weekly casting calls gave locals a chance to be seen on the silver screen. The movie is set to be released in theaters in May.
But that wasn't the only film that brought major celebs to Wilmington. The comedy "We're the Millers," starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis, set up shop just blocks from the WWAY studios in downtown Wilmington. Folks gathered behind barricades on what we call Front Street, but in the movie it was transformed to Miller Street. You can catch the flick in theaters in August.
But before that, how about a sappy love story on Valentine's Day? That's when you can catch "Safe Haven," the Nicholas Sparks book turned movie that shot around Southport over the summer with leading lady Julianne Hough and her on-set beau Josh Duhamel.
The Cape Fear even attracted two-time oscar winner Hilary swank. The Port City was transformed into Washington, DC, for the HBO series "Mary and Martha," about two women fighting to eradicate malaria.
Not too bad of a year in film for our small town on the coast. Many are hoping next year is just as big of a production.
