Thalian Hall set to go digital

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It will soon be out with the old and in with the new at Thalian Hall, as some changes are in store for the new year.

Thalian Hall has long been showing movies using hundred-year old technology, but now the theater is going digital.

Thalian Hall director Tony Rivenbark says this year will be the first that major motion pictures will be released only digitally and not on 35mm film. He says this is a change the theater was expecting and is excited about.

The change will allow moviegoers to see new films faster and in better quality, but the transition is set to cost upward of $100,000.

"We have great attendance and a wonderful fan base and we think most of those people will all support this effort so they can continue to see the very best film," said Rivenbark.

Rivenbark says no taxpayer money will be used for the upgrades and the funds will all come from private donations.

The theater plans to have the conversions done by early this spring.
