Health inspectors found three low performers, and two restaurants are looking for a second chance. We start with a low performer that quickly asked for a second chance. On October third, a health inspector found meatballs, turkey and ham at Mellow Mushroom on Oleander Drive in Wilmington stored too warm. There was also sauce stored with a drink pitcher in it. Chicken, broccoli and cheese stored uncovered in the cooler and large baking pans, pizza rack, plates and utensils stored dirty. Nine violations and a score of 85.5 for Mellow Mushroom. Six days later -- a re-inspection. The restaurant lost five points for pans and cutting boards stored dirty. Six violations and a slight improvement to 90.5. Last month a Brunswick County inspector handed the Pizza Hut in river run shopping center in Southport an 80.5. Three weeks later there were some improvements and a re-inspection score of 91.5. Now to the low performers. Starting with Betty's Waterfront Restaurant near Holden Beach. Four points off for animal droppings, live and dead roaches and a fly problem. Two gallons of milk were out of date by several days and many bottles of bleach were stored over dry food containers. Thirteen violations and a score of 80 for Betty's Waterfront. Back to Wilmington and Echo Farms Golf and Country Club. Five points off for soiled multi-use containers. Five more because employees need to wash hands when changing job tasks. A lot of things need to be cleaned. An 82.5 for Echo Farms. Finally, back to Brunswick County and Joe's BBQ on Main Street in Shallotte. Potato salad, barbecue, ribs and chicken were stored too warm. Dry food containers need to be re-labeled and several things need cleaning. A two-point bonus for workers passing a food safety course bumps up Joe's BBQ's score to 83.5.
