WPD could contribute four officers to county's school safety plan

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Police Department is looking to help out with security in schools throughout New Hanover County.

Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said today he could provide four police officers to help in the county's effort to increase law enforcement presence at schools.

Evangelous says the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office can then place those officers where they need additional security to keep kids safe.

County leaders have said the county's municipalities should consider helping cover the cost of the sheriff's plan to put 24 armed officers in elementary schools.
