Home construction continues to grow in New Hanover County

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County says home construction continues to strengthen this fiscal year with more than $90 million construction dollars spent.

According to the latest construction activity report from the New Hanover County Development Services Center, the largest project permitted in December was a $7.6 million multi-family apartment complex on Cedar Lane in Wilmington. The second largest project was a private aircraft hangar at 1859 Dolan Drive, at a cost of $1 million.

Other significant highlights include:

Residential New Construction

-A total of 75 new single family residential permits were issued in December, a 38-percent increase from same period in 2011.
-For this fiscal year to day, permits have been issued for 364 new single family units, compared to 243 units during the same period in 2011 - a 33-percent increase.

Total Construction Comparison (December 2012 to December 2011)

-The overall number of inspections increased by 3 percent.
-Construction permits issued increased by 9 percent.
-Construction dollars spent increased by 54 percent.

Total Construction Fiscal Year Comparison (2012-13 to 2011-12)

-Total construction dollars spent decreased 4 percent.
-Total number of permits issued increased 2 percent.
-Total inspections for Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Zoning increased 16 percent.
-Permits issued at no cost for city and/or county government projects for this fiscal year-to-date remains at .01 percent of the total construction dollars spent.
-Total new construction dollars spent for residential construction have now increased to 6 percent over commercial construction dollars spent.

Projects in "The Pipe"

After issuing building permits in December 2012, totaling $27.8 million, there are 129 projects that remain in the plan review process, totaling $106 million.
