Camp Lejeune sergeant pleads guilty to bribery charge


CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (WWAY) -- A Camp Lejeune Gunnery Sergeant pleaded guilty in federal court to a soliciting bribes from a government contractor while deployed to Iraq.

Julio Arreola pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to a felony count of demanding and seeking a bribe.

Arreola had recommended the purchase of various items from the company in return for cash payments, suggesting the company inflate its true costs to the department of defense, then paying his bribe from the excess profit back in 2008.

36-year-old Julio Arreola faces a maximum sentence of 15 year behind bars, and a $250,000 fine with 3 years probation.

Arreola will be formally sentenced in May.
