CFCC Basic Law Enforcement Training graduation

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It was a big night last night for some college students in the Port City. The Basic Law Enforcement Training Class graduated from Cape Fear Community College and they have a lot to be proud of.

This is the graduating class that helped solve the mystery of 83-year-old Alma Lawson who went missing on November 4th.

"We just looked around the woods and one of our classmates spotted some clothing that they thought might have been hers. Then they found her down the hill there," said class president Cory Finch.

Basic Law Enforcement Training students from CFCC helped police search for clues in Lawson's disappearance. On January 4th, the group found human remains in a pond in the Love Grove community. The medical examiner's office ruled that the death was an accidental suicide.

A graduate of the program, Alex Melgar says, "When we actually did discover the body, just yes it was a tragedy but to bring the family closure is more than anybody can ask for."

Students definitely helped Lawson's family find closure and now, they graduates are looking forward to starting their careers.
