State approves highway paving projects for Brunswick, Pender, New Hanover counties


RALEIGH, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- The NC Department of Transportation has awarded a $13.9 million contract to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson to widening, resurfacing and shoulder work on roads in Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties.

The project includes sections of U.S. 74, U.S. 76, U.S. 117/N.C. 132, N.C. 133, as well as 21 sections of secondary roads. The project also includes resurfacing work on the I-40 on- and off-ramps in New Hanover and Pender counties. The work can begin as early as March 18 with final completion by June 28, 2014.

Work on primary roads in the project includes:

Widening and resurfacing N.C. 133 from Daws Creek Road to just south of Old River Road near Belville in Brunswick County;
Resurfacing U.S. 117/N.C. 132 from Gordon Road to just south of Murrayville Road in New Hanover County;
Resurface U.S. 74/Eastwood Road from .17 mile west of Military Cutoff Road to .27 mile east of Heidi Trask Bridge in Wilmington;
Resurface U.S. 76/Oleander Drive from just west of Hawthorne to .15 mile south of U.S. 74/Eastwood Road in Wilmington;
Widen and resurface U.S. 117/Shipyard Boulevard northbound and southbound from .06 mile north of U.S. 421 to N.C. 132 in Wilmington; and
Resurface U.S. 117/N.C. 132/South College Road from U.S. 117/Shipyard Boulevard to .07 mile south of Wilshire Boulevard in Wilmington.

The project also includes work on parts of secondary roads in Brunswick and New Hanover counties, including:

Exum Road, Stanley Road and Civietown Road in Brunswick County; and
North Kerr Avenue, 23rd Street, Farley Road, Whipporwill Lane, Channel Haven Drive, Aqua Drive, Marsh Hen Drive, Brighton Road, Cornwell Court, Shelley Drive and Golden Rod Drive in New Hanover County.

This is one of 24 contracts totaling $59.9 million awarded by NCDOT in January for highway and bridge projects across North Carolina. NCDOT awarded the contracts to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The bids received on the projects awarded came in about 4.8 percent, or $3.1 million, below NCDOT estimates.
