It's not in Scripture

It's a religious CEREMONY.
Don't confuse the two.
Does every Muslim make the pilgrimage? They try.
Does every person of the Jewish Faith make it to the Wailing wall?
Each religion has their unique quirks and Catholicism is no different. Ashes are nothing more than a visible sign of the faith. Catholics also get their throats "blessed" on the Feast of Saint Blaise. It is a ceremony of good health that Catholics and Anglicans share.
Unlike many in the Catholic faith I celebrate the differences and I am accepting of all people. I realize that my faith has shortcomings - as do many religions.
When you look past the differences you begin to realize that your particular religion is nothing more than the vehicle you use to interact with your God, and each of us does so in different ways.
