ONLY ON 3: Man tased at basketball game speaks out

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- A Whiteville man who police say was tased for disorderly conduct and assaulting an officer says that the Whiteville Police were out of line.

At Friday night’s game, Michael Kelly was 24-hours removed from the funeral of his father. He says to get his mind off of things he went to a Whiteville Wolfpack game to try and cheer up.

“I’m from Whiteville and I ain’t never had no problems going to no games up there,” said Michael Kelly. “I always had fun at the games.”

Kelly says he had just returned to his seat when there was a questionable call. Like many fans in his section he hurled a few insults at the ref and the next thing he knew he had been ejected from the basketball game, and two officers were surrounding him.

"They told me to get up and I got up and I bent over and grabbed my stuff and one of them pulled out a taser gun and held it to my stomach and he pushed me a little bit with it,” said Kelly. “When I leaned and fell back then the other one pulled out another taser gun. They tased me and I started shaking. My heart could have gone out my socket."

While Kelly admits to being out of line while jeering the ref he says the police should have handled the situation differently.

“They could have escorted me to the door you know what I'm saying and told me not to come back on the premises no more and I would have did that for them, but what they did it wasn't nothing but lies,” said Kelly.
