Law enforcement leaders meet to discuss potential crime lab

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Law enforcement leaders met today to discuss the possibility of a regional lab that could help speed up some investigations.

District Attorney Jon David met with the county's police chiefs and other law enforcement officials to talk about issues important to the county and pending investigations.

The group meets about every six weeks to maintain communication among departments. Thursday, they discussed the need for a regional crime lab in our area.

David says it would help speed up some of the area's most pressing cases. "Well, speed is important in prosecutions and a lot of times our cases will get bumped down from a testing standpoint. And so if we're able to test both drugs, and blood, and DNA at a local level, that would greatly speed up the prosecutions of some of our most pressing and important cases in the system," said David.

There is no official word yet on when or where a crime lab would take form.

David says the key to fighting crime is communication across departments, which is why he says these meetings are necessary.
