WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- With 215 blooms displayed, 545 attendees, and 6 new American Camellia Society members, the 63rd Annual Tidewater Camellia Club Show was a success. This weekend, growers from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia plucked their best blossoms to show off at the Arab Shrine Club on South College road. They competed against one another for a spot at the head table. "What we are looking for are the most beautiful Camellia blooms," said Matt Hunter, President of the American Camellia Society. "We have American Camellia Society trained judges who come in and judge according to a very complex set of rules to determine what is the most beautiful flower." Though all Camellia species are native of eastern Asia, they can be grown right here in the United States in all different colors and sizes. Hunter says the show is about more than just displaying these beautiful flowers. His staff wants to help people. "We have a lot of very gifted growers who love to educate folks about camellias and help them solve problems, whether they have insects or diseases, or maybe just a camellia that is not looking to good," said Hunter. "We encourage them to come to our shows and join our club." Winners received prizes ranging from crystal to certificates. They also earned a spot at the head table accompanied by their prize. A list of winners can be found below: Best Bloom Japonica: Ogle Hess, 'Mathotiana' Runner-up Japonica: Lindsey Odom, 'Lucy O' Best Bloom Sasanqua: Tim Marvin, 'Bonanza' Runner-up Sasanqua: Mike Savalli, 'Dazzler' Club's Choice Best Bloom: Lindsey Odom, 'Dr. Tinsley' Club's Choice Runner-up Bloom: Marlene Eader, 'Shishi-Gashira'
