There are two thing at play here - the immediate issue of THIS years budget - meaning the debt ceiling - and long term debt reduction.
If my figures are right over 30 years our debt has grown to $15+T
Reducing it by 20% in the next decade ($3T) is not all that bad - if no new debt is added to it.
Medicare is the big thing though.
