FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Former Leland cop not among those who lost certifications

LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- The North Carolina Department of Justice now says one of five former Leland Police officers it said had lost their law enforcement certification was not part of the criminal investigation.

"As a correction to what I previously told you, Officer John Blasingame was not part of the criminal investigation and his law enforcement certification remains valid, although he is not currently employed by a law enforcement agency," DOJ spokeswoman Noelle Talley said in an e-mail this afternoon to WWAY.

Talley had previously confirmed to WWAY and other media outlets that Blasingame was among the officers that had lost their certification at the end of a criminal probe by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Today, Talley did reconfirm that former officers Karl Smith, Bill Kozak, Rick Dellapia and Joseph Michael Landen all lost their certifications last month. She said it was all the public information available on the investigation.
