Duke, North Carolina watering fake fields in middle of drought

READ MORE:
RALEIGH (AP) -- Many communities are under watering restrictions because of the drought. But Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are watering artificial turfs for their field hockey teams. The International Hockey Federation requires college teams to saturate synthetic turfs before practice and games. Coaches say players have a better grip on a wet surface and report fewer injuries. Duke has a business exemption from Durham to spray the field. The school didn't know how much water is used. The Orange Water and Sewer authority imposed more severe watering restrictions last night and it's unclear if North Carolina will be able to saturate the field before Saturday's game. The International Hockey Federation in Switzerland could not be reached for comment. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
