WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Hundreds of volunteers are answering calls from all over the region receiving pledges for WHQR radio's fundraising campaign.
More than half of the station's annual budget comes from the drive.
Station manager cleve callison says the station is a part of the non-profit community and is a place for people to come together and share a common interest.
"Anyone can turn on the radio and listen, so pledging to a public radio station is really kind of an emotional investment in the future of that station and in a statement in its role in the community," Callison said. "It's people saying I value it enough that I'm going to pay for something that I can get free, because I want it to be in this community, and I want other people to have it as well."
The pledge drive lasts until Tuesday. The station hopes to raise $160,000.
