Boy battling cancer gets wish granted

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Trey Stephens is seven years old and has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for more than six months. Saturday, his parents brought him to Hoggard High School's field house, where the wrestling team crowned Trey honorary team member for the day, and Make-A-Wish granted Trey's dream of going to Wrestlemania.

"You know, we think we have struggles, and then you hear about a young kid in elementary school," Hoggard wrestling coach Craig Underwood said. "I mean, he should be thinking about wrestling with his buddies not fighting cancer."

Trey said he had a lot of fun. He said he loves wrestling and watching his favorite wrestler, John Cena, do his special moves.

"I baptized him into wrestling when we were sitting in the hospital at Chapel Hill, because I grew up kind of watching it," Trey's father said. "He couldn't really move around a whole lot, so we started watching and playing on X-box."

Trey's father says he is grateful for all the help and donations Make-A-Wish and Hoggard wrestlers have made. Underwood says the mark Trey left on his team is more of a blessing.
