ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A judge told an Asheville woman accused of killing an unborn child during a delivery that she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/16kKaSK ) 44-year-old Tina Louise Bailey appeared in Buncombe County District Court Thursday via video link from the county jail. Bailey is charged with murder of an unborn child, obtaining property by false pretense and obstruction of justice.

Police described Bailey in court papers as a midwife, though she is not listed with the state board.

An arrest warrant said Bailey provided medical services to a woman in labor in July, telling the woman she could provide all necessary care during labor.

The state of North Carolina regulates midwifery, and practitioners must be a certified nurse midwife to legally attend deliveries.
