A bond referendum to expand and renovate New Hanover County schools may take longer to appear before voters than originally thought.

When discussions began about the referendum in October, members of the New Hanover County Board of Education planned for it to go on the November 2013 ballot. School board members and county commissioners said that while no final decision has been made, they're leaning toward waiting at least a year before presenting the referendum to voters. But one thing that both groups feel is immediately necessary is a new school in the northern part of the county.

In January, the school board unanimously voted to ask the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners to approve putting a bond referendum to fund new and renovated schools on the November 2013 ballot. The final price tag would be determined by both the school board and the county commissioners - a decision that must come no later than April for the bond to appear on the November ballot.
