Four in the hospital after crash on 3rd Street including a police officer

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Four people, including a police officer and a child are in the hospital tonight after an accident on 3rd Street.

According to Lieutenant George Perkins with the Wilmington Police Department the Ford pick-up truck was traveling westbound on Greenfield Street when he ran a red light.

After running the red light, the truck clipped the passenger side of a U-Haul van traveling southbound on 3rd street.

An unidentified police officer driving cruiser 0935, was traveling close behind and saw it all happen.

According to officials the truck appeared to be trying to flee the scene, so the officer tried to step in.

As the officer was approaching the truck, it spun around in the street and hit the side of the police car.

Third street was re-opened around 9 PM.

Police say the police officer and the three passengers in the truck were taken to New Hanover Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
