ONLY ON 3: Assault victim sues hospital, ex-husband

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A woman assaulted by her ex-husband at New Hanover Regional Medical Center more than two years ago has filed a lawsuit against him and the hospital.

Tressa Bumbalo Angermeier wants a pay-out for the crime and what she calls negligence by hospital employees.

Angermeier says her ex Thomas Bumbalo kept her in a hospital call room for about four hours, and no one came to her help.

Angermeier says on the night of March 6, 2011, she went to see her now ex-husband at work at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She says Thomas kept her in a call room, which a hospital spokeswoman says is for staffers on call to rest, for hours.

She says during that time, he strangled her, banged his head against the walls, kicked the walls and threw personal items at the wall destroying them.

Angermeier says with all the the noise, someone should have noticed.

She claims he put his hands around her neck resulting in her passing out. She also claims security videos from the night of the attack were erased.

The hospital's staff did not cooperate with an investigation and acted to avoid civil and criminal liability, she says.

Angermeier says suffered minor injuries, requiring an annual MRI scan.

Angermeier says the hospital let Bumbalo continue working after committing a felony. He later pleaded guilty to assault on a female. He was fired from the hospital in 2011 and moved to Florida.

Angermeier has e-mailed county leaders to investigate the hospital. Those e-mails are among a set of documents commissioner Brian Berger has been trying to share with people, including Gov. Pat McCrory recently.

A hospital spokeswoman did not return our request for comment.

We tried calling Thomas Bumbalo to hear what he had to say. He has not returned our call.
