NHSO K-9 takes top honors for second year

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit won first place overall for the 2013 United States Police Canine Association Trials that took place last week in Holly Springs. The United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) is the association utilized by the NHSO to certify K-9s for law enforcement duties. Our area is Region 2 and it consists of NC and SC. The trial is broken down into 5 categories: Obedience, Agility, Evidence Search, Suspect Search and Criminal Apprehension with and without gunfire.

Cpl. J. Stegall and K-9 Jango were awarded the Top Dog award for finishing 1st overall. Stegall and Jango also placed 1st in obedience, 1st in agility, 2nd in evidence search and 1st in criminal apprehension. The duo finished with a total score of 684.15 out of 700 points. This was K-9 Jango's second regional trial and he has finished 1st place in both.

Dep. R. Mills and K-9 Torque finished 3rd overall with a score of 666.17. They were four tenths of a point out of second place. They won 1st place in suspect search with a perfect score of 110. This was K-9 Torque's first trial.
