Bill to change NC redistricting has many sponsors

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- House Republicans and Democrats backing changes to how legislative and congressional districts are drawn every ten years say their proposal would create fair maps no matter which party is in power in North Carolina.

The sponsors of a House bill that would direct the legislature's nonpartisan permanent staff to develop maps based on census data held a news conference Wednesday to urge its passage.

Sixty-one of the House's 120 members have signed on to the measure identical to a 2011 bill that passed in the chamber but died in the Senate. The changes wouldn't take effect until after the 2020 census.

Republican Rep. Chuck McGrady of Hendersonville says it was a good government idea before the GOP drew the current maps in 2011, and it's a good idea after.
