Push continues to move Brunswick County back to Wilmington MSA

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Brunswick County's move to Myrtle Beach's Metro Area had local leaders in Washington, DC, this week encouraging federal officials to reverse their recent decision.

Holden Beach is one of the many beautiful places that Brunswick County has to offer, but after the recent move by the federal government, Brunswick County is no longer a part of the Wilmington Metropolitan Area.

"We found out about a month ago that based on the 2010 Census, something had changed in the methodology that the census uses and it pushed Brunswick County into the Myrtle Beach (MSA) and out of the Wilmington (MSA)," Wilmington Chamber of Commerce President Connie Majure-Rhett said.

Majure-Rhett along with leaders from Wilmington, New Hanover County and Brunswick County were in our Nation’s Capital this week looking for answers.

"They were very open in the meeting and they listened. We didn't get an answer on whether or not they would reconsider but I think we will talk back to them again and there are a series of steps we have agreed to take," Majure-Rhett said.

We did reach out to the federal Office of Management and Budget today to talk about the change, but they did not return our request for comment.
