Appalachian State has nose-dived since beating Michigan

Story body

CHARLOTTE (AP) -- The Associated Press changed the rules for the Top 25 after Appalachian State beat Michigan earlier this season. The change allowed teams from the Football Championship Subdivision to get votes in the big poll. But the Mountaineers have had problems since their upset of then Number Five Michigan. The two-time defending national champions of the division formerly known as One-Double-A are in sixth place in the Southern Conference. At this rate, they may not qualify for an attempt to defend the title again. Appalachian State was beaten by Wofford earlier this year and by Georgia Southern last Saturday. The team has been plagued by injuries and an inability to stop the run. Mountaineers linebacker Jacque Roman says everyone is playing his team like they're Michigan.
