Sheriffs hope for more state lab techs to speed up cases

READ MORE:

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Law enforcement leaders from across the state are meeting in Wrightsville Beach this week for the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association meeting. They're discussing topics including how to get case work done faster to help the people involved in a case.

Attorney General Roy Cooper, who spoke to the group yesterday, wants to add jobs with the state's crime lab for faster results.

Sheriffs' Association Vice President Eddie Caldwell says results are taking too long, and the number of cases coming in has increased.

"You've got a defendant, they're in jail, they can't be tried until the evidence comes back," he said. "Then victims are looking for resolutions, and closure and it's an adverse impact on the victim, so this well help the victims as well."

Caldwell says lab agents are required to appear in court now. He says the time driving all over the state plus being in court takes time from working on the cases. He hopes adding staff to the labs will help speed things up for everyone.
