DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A football player from Pennsylvania says he was texting and talking with his girlfriend moments before a shooting in a Durham parking lot in which a teammate was killed and he was wounded.
The Herald-Sun of Durham reported that Thomas Woodson testified Wednesday that he heard someone in his group yell "Gun!" He said he pounded on the door of a nearby restaurant and yelled. "Somebody's shooting! Somebody's shooting!" Woodson was shot and wounded.
The testimony came in the trial of 22-year-old Gabriel James Gamez of San Antonio, who faces a variety of charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Gamez is accused of killing 18-year-old Darrell Turner, who along with his teammates had stopped in Durham on their way to a football camp in Florida in June 2011.
