Store workers honored for helping catch wanted man

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Workers at a Wilmington sports goods store were honored today for helping police catch a suspect they were looking for.

Tuesday morning police got a report of that someone had broken into a car on Shinn Point Road and stolen golf clubs. Ofc. Darrell Moore too the report and suggested the victim make some quick calls to area businesses most likely to be approached by the thief.

A short time after getting the victim's call, an employee at Play It Again Sports on S. College Road was approached by a man offering to sell golf clubs matching the description of the ones stolen. Her manager called 911, and Ofc. Moore went to the store, where he arrested Charles Joseph Whitehurst, 26, of Wilmington, and recovered the clubs.

Tom Hackler, founder of the Greenville Loop community watch group, presented certificates of recognition today at Play It Again Sports.

The outcome of the store employees’ quick action was that the stolen clubs were recovered and the suspect was arrested.

Whitehurst is in jail under $10,000 bond. He is charged with breaking and entering, larceny and obtaining property by false pretense/attempt.
