WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A man charged with murder in a weekend shooting in New Hanover County spent more than five years behind bars on a similar charge. Shannon Jerome Mitchell, 29, is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Gilbert Lee McClammy, 44, Saturday night. Mitchell is in jail without bond scheduled to make his first court appearance today. The Department of Corrections website shows Mitchell served five years and seven months for a 2006 conviction for accessory after the fact to a second-degree murder and several drug charges. The crimes happened in 2003, according to records. His sentence ended in July 2011 with his parole ending in April 2012. Court records show the accessory after the fact charge stemmed from Mitchell throwing away the gun Brian Decarlos Junious used to shoot and killed Wayne Cornelius Mitchell on July 5, 2003.
