I would go one further and include them in the aggregate mix for the asphalt on the I-140 project.
Now as for Guesty Guestington's comment:
"A push should be made to finish I140 ASAP. It's the closest thing on the horizon, and I believe it'll make a huge difference."
I wonder if, in fact, this is wrong.
Currently you can take I-140 from 421. Coming the other way you can jump on I-140 from I-40. From J'ville you can get on I-140 near Porters Neck.
To me this SHOULD have alleviated MOST of the traffic already - but it hasn't.
Traffic over CF and IH bridges is still too heavy telling me at least that commuters are the main issue here - not people trying to bypass Wilmington.
Sure getting 140 completed may take some people off the bridges coming from the west but I doubt this will affect bridge traffic all that much.
Just think about where the IH and CF bridges dump people off at in town - right smack in the middle of it.
This is why I am suspect of the Skyway project. It puts people in the southern part of ILM. If they are looking to get to I-40 they go straight up Independence to Shipyard to College.
But of course the design and location of the proposed Skyway tell me this is not a by pass bridge but a commuter bridge......
I have my doubts about both projects, which is why I suggest plain simple designs rather than sweeping grand suspension bridge work.
