House bill relaxes rules for stadium alcohol sales

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A bill relaxing rules for selling beer to seated fans at North Carolina stadiums has passed the state House.

The bill passed by the House Tuesday permits alcohol sales in the seating areas of professional ballparks with a capacity of at least 3,000 people. Current law allows for in-stand sales only at venues of at least 60,000 seats.

The bill also directs the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission to adopt rules for when venues have to suspend alcohol sales during an event.

Supporters of the measure argued the bill creates greater convenience for patrons. Opponents from both parties said the bill encourages greater consumption.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
