WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The regional fight continues in attempt to get Brunswick County back into Wilmington’s metropolitan statistical area, after the Office of Management and Budget announced its move to Myrtle Beach’s MSA earlier this year.

Some of Wilmington leaders say Brunswick County’s MSA shift negatively affects the region’s economic development and job growth.

Local leaders met with federal leaders April 16th in Washington, D.C., to request Brunswick County convert back to Wilmington’s MSA.

At Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, Connie Majure-Rhett, of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, and Scott Satterfield, of Wilmington Business Development presented the council with an update of the request.

They said they are still waiting to hear from the Office of Management and Budget but are staying vigilant and hoping for a change of course.

“We are hoping for a positive response and a positive response would be to restore Brunswick County back into our MSA, but we will have to see what happens. We know that it will be a precedent setting, but we believe there is a compelling case that puts Brunswick rightly back into the Greater Wilmington MSA,” Satterfield said.

According to Satterfield, the Office of Budget and Management have never reversed an MSA move before. He says they are expecting to hear back from the Office of Management and Budget soon.
