Officer killed in 1865 added to local Law Enforcement Memorial

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Police today honored a fallen officer more than 147 years after his death.

The department hosted the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony this morning. The event is held in memory of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Today a new name was added to the memorial. Ofc. Thomas Devane was killed while walking home from work in August 1865. His great-great-granddaughter was able to see him honored by today's law enforcement.

"It's very special, especially my mother, who couldn't make it today, as she's worked strong and hard with (WPD Cpl. Stephanie) Boucher to get this done," Mary Murphy said. "It means an awful lot."

Ofc. Devane was a Confederate soldier during the Civil War before joining the Wilmington Police Department.
