Chancellor not aware ECSU crime not investigated

ELIZABETH CITY, NC (AP) -- The chancellor of Elizabeth City State University says his administration was not aware that more than 100 campus crimes over six years were not investigated.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reported that Chancellor Willie Gilchrist said Monday that his office did not micromanage the police department.

Gilchrist confirmed that the campus police department did not investigate about 125 criminal complaints going back to 2007. Those included 18 sexual assaults.

School Police Chief Sam Beamon was placed on administrative leave April 25 and resigned effective May 10. The newspaper said the resignation followed the State Bureau of Investigation's decision to look into allegations of obstruction of justice and witness intimidation on campus.

That investigation followed a report to Elizabeth City police that a school security officer assaulted her.
