Ship could face fine for wave that hit ferry

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- A ship blamed for causing a wave that crashed over the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry earlier this week could face a fine, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident involving the Hanjin Pretoria and the M/V Southport Tuesday evening. Coast Guard spokesman PO Brandyn Hill says investigators are working to find what caused the wave. The NC Department of Transportation says the wave, which damaged cars on the ferry and reportedly injured at least one person, was caused by the wake of the passing freighter.

Hill says investigators could make safety recommendations if they find the ship was at fault. He said the Coast Guard could also issue a fine. Hill said he did not know if the Pretoria's crew or a river pilot was at the wheel when the incident happened.

Hill said there's no way to say how long the investigation will take.
