BUILDING HISTORY: Brunswick Inn

READ MORE:

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) – This building was started in 1800 and it was a Governor’s summer home. Now it is the home of Jim and Judy Clary and the home for their business, the Brunswick Inn.

“We’ve had it 16 years and we’ve run it as a bed and breakfast for over 14 years,” owner Judy Clary explains.

The Clary’s came to Southport and like so many people began looking for a home. When their first choice was ruled out, Jim had another idea.

“He said the Brunswick Inn is for sale so let’s stay over tonight and look at the Brunswick Inn, and we came in about 5 days before Christmas and it was totally decorated , all the fireplaces were going and we have 9 fire places ,” Judy said. “And I said I don’t know how you’re going to do it but you need to find a way because I want this house.”

The Brunswick Inn came with quite a history.

“The sign you see on the house is 1859 which is these two floors being rebuilt but the basement is 1800, and we have eight rooms down there.” Judy told us.

This was the original site for Governor Benjamin Smith’s summer home.

“The pocket doors are original to the house the heart of pine floors are all the original floors in the house. When you go in you’ll see the rotunda , that’s all run plaster .” Judy Clary revealed on the tour.

The Brunswick inn seems to appeal to everyone and it also attracted the film industry.

”Several movies have been filmed here, Halle Berry got her start with Oprah Winfrey in the Wedding, they had the house for about a month,” Judy recounted. “ Walt Disney had it for a couple of movies, Spies and Morning Glories. The most recent one we were in was Summer Catch with Freddy Prinze Jr., Beverly D’Angelo and Jessica Biel.”

Tough guy actor Charles Bronson stayed at the Brunswick Inn. Don’t tell his fans but Jim and Judy said he was very easy going and laid back.

If you are interested in the Brunswick Inn is open for reservations and the ocean breeze is free. And if you have a building with a good story, please let me know at, cphillips@wwaytv3.com
