Historic Wilmington Foundation recognizes preservation

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Historic Wilmington Foundation held their annual preservation awards ceremony Thursday night to recognize efforts of those keeping and improving our historic buildings.

WWAY was one of the sponsors of the event.

“It was a great night, we had a good crowd here and we did 13 awards of excellence,” said George Edwards Executive Director. ” You couldn't ask for a better group of award winners. There were projects representing rehabilitation, new construction, and leadership with Susy Hamilton. It was a great evening.”

There were buildings large and small, home and commercial like the law firm of Murchison, Taylor and Gibson, in the shadow of the courthouse

“We are very grateful for our roots in historic downtown Wilmington, I can't imagine being anywhere else.” Attorney Andy McVey told us.

Increasingly, some homes in historic areas are new construction.

“We bought a lot in Carolina Place next to Wallace park and we decided to build a historic bungalow that would fit in with the neighborhood,” homeowner Christina Erichsen explained. “We decided to do an old bungalow floor plan with modern touches to it.”

May is National Historic Preservation month. Next week the Historic Wilmington Foundation will release a list of threatened places, homes and buildings in need of some immediate help.
