FDA investigates contaminated drug in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC ( -- Following reports of seven negative reactions, the federal Food and Drug Administration is investigating the production of an injectable steroid that shipped to several clinics in North Carolina, including one in Brunswick County.

According to the FDA, each report involves a patient who received an injection of potentially contaminated preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate.

The drug, typically used to treat pain, was at the heart of a fungal meningitis outbreak last year that killed more than 55 people who received contaminated injections from a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts. At least one report in the current investigation indicates a fungal infection, the FDA said.
