CFCC scholarship to honor Michael's Seafood founder

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce will honor the memory of a well-known local chef and help students at Cape Fear Community College in the process.

Tomorrow the chamber will present CFCC a check for the Michael McGowan Endowed Scholarship Fund.

McGowan was an award-winning chef and owner of Michael's Seafood in Carolina Beach. Last fall he lost his battle with Cystic Fibrosis. The Michael McGowan Scholarship was established by Michael's wife, Shelly. The scholarship will be available to students in CFCC's culinary program.

To date, more than 70 percent of the funds needed have been raised to establish an endowed scholarship by September 2013. The ultimate goal is to raise at least $20,000 for the endowed scholarship, so that funds will continue to be available to students who share McGowan's passion for cooking.

The Chamber of Commerce will make its check presentation at Michael's Seafood tomorrow at noon.
