Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry takes part in security drill

FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) -- You may notice something out of the ordinary today on the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry.

The NC Department of Transportation Ferry Division says it is taking part in security exercise drills today involving the ferry terminals and vessels on the route.

The DOT says exercise is not taking place in response to any threat to the ferry vessels, terminals or any other transportation venue or facility. Instead it is as an exercise to assist in evaluating and enhancing security measures for the North Carolina Ferry System. Similar drills have taken place within the Ferry Division over the last several years.

The Ferry Division and its staff are working on the exercise with the Transportation Security Administration's Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response team, law enforcement and emergency service agencies from Brunswick and New Hanover counties, and the United States Coast Guard Sector North Carolina. This is an exercise in which local and federal agencies work together to supplement existing security resources.
