WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Cape Fear's Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of their first neighborhood, The Cottages at Cornerstone. The 40-home subdivision on Prices Lane in Wilmington has become a tight-knit community for those who live there.

The newest and final family to join the neighborhood, Erika and Shannon, were beyond excited.

“We've been married for 17 years, and this is something we've been working on our whole life, to provide this for our family," Shannon said.

They say the community involvement is what makes this place so special.

“It’s a great community, and a great neighborhood to raise a family,” Erika said.

But it didn't always look this way. Barbara Birkenheuer, former Executive Director of The Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity, remembers what this street looked like from the beginning.

"We did have a dream,” she said. “And I remember them just putting the road in, and there was nothing else here but trees, and walking down, and envisioning what it might look like. I had no idea it was going to be this wonderful."

She says her dreams have been fulfilled.

"It is a dream come true,” she said. “And it shows you what hard work, dedication, and working together can produce in life.”

The couple worked a total of 400 hours building their home, and other homes in the neighborhood.

But now they say they are ready to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

"Ready to move in, ready to get in here and start our lives, and ready for the next part of our journey,” Erika said.

"Yeah,” Shannon said. “We're ready to take a deep breath and relax for a little bit to be honest with you."

They say this isn't the end of road, though.

"We're habitat for lifers,” Erika added. “I mean this has been such a life-changing experience, that we couldn't ever stop.”
