RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A bill requiring North Carolina educators to teach that abortions put women at risk of later premature births has been approved by the House.

Lawmakers approved the bill Thursday mostly along party lines. The measure requires educators to teach students in grades seven and higher about a number of risk factors associated with later premature births, including abortion, inadequate prenatal care and smoking.

Republicans agreed to a Democratic amendment calling abortion and other dangers "risks" rather than "causes." The two parties dispute the scientific basis for including abortion as a cause of later preterm birth, which can lead to development complications and death. Democrats call the bill an attempt to inject political ideology into school curriculum.

The bill already passed the Senate, which will have to approve the House's changes.
