Wilmington drops plans to add Galleria land

READ MORE:

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- It looks like the possibility of the old Galleria shopping center on Wrightsville Ave. becoming part of Wilmington is over.

After the Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen voted last night against supporting deannexing the property, the City of Wilmington decided to drop its bid to move the property into its limits.

City Council was scheduled to discuss the property during special session this morning, but only Mayor Bill Saffo and Councilman Kevin O'Grady showed up.

"It obviously is a valuable piece of property, and the alderman of Wrightsville Beach saw it that way," Saffo said. "I respect their decision, and I hope something nice will happen with that property in the future."

Wrightsville Beach says it's willing to work with the developer that wants to but the property, but leaders say plans to make it a mixed-use area do not fit with the town's vision.
