Belle of Topsail towed from Intracoastal Waterway

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) -- The Belle of Topsail became grounded in the Intracoastal Waterway near Surf City Friday evening after experiencing problems with its oil filter.

Captain David Luther says a hose-clamp rubbed against the boat's oil filter, eventually creating a hole in the filter. Oil was then leaking out of the boat, forcing the boat to anchor.

The Coast Guard and Pender County fire department helped 46 passengers and 4 crew members aboard the dinner cruise boat to a sport fishing boat named 'Big Daddy.' They were then taken to shore at the Beach House Marina in Surf City.

Luther says he had an open bar for the guests on the boat to keep them happy. He then refunded money.

"Most of them said it was the best rehearsal dinner they ever had," said Luther.

A passenger aboard 'Big Daddy' towed the Belle of Topsail to its homeport in Surf City.

No one was injured and the dinner cruise ship is back in business this weekend.
