Wilmington Police launch "Operation Tranquility"

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington Police Department has launched the second phase of “Operation Tranquility.”

More than 30 officers from local, state and federal agencies took to the streets Wednesday night to reduce gun and gang violence.

“We need to send a message to the people that are committing these crimes. The citizens of Wilmington are tired,” said Lt. Renado Prince.

The program is intended to restore peace to area neighborhoods, which have been plagued by gun violence over the past several weeks.

“Our job is to take weapons off the street and we will be making a lot of arrests,” said Prince.

Residents living in the Houston Moore neighborhood didn’t want to talk to WWAY out of fear for their safety. However they say the violence in and around their neighborhood needs to be addressed.

“You don’t have to tell us your name. All we want is the information so we can act on it,” said Prince.

The task force also includes members of the District Attorney’s Office.
