US Forest Service closes park roads due to rains

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Heavy rain has forced the U.S. Forest Service to close several roads in the Nantahala and Pisgah national forests out of concern for the public's safety.

The forest service issued a statement Tuesday saying the roads are either damaged, impassable, or both.

In Pisgah National Forest, officials have closed Forest Service Road 162 near Silvermine Campground. Little Buck Road is considered impassable, and Upper Cover Creek Road is closed as erosion has caused road failure. Pilot Mountain Road remains closed because of culvert failures and other repairs.

The road to the Panther Top Shooting Range in the Nantahala National Forest is closed because of wet road conditions. The road will reopen as soon as weather conditions permit, which the forest service said could be as early as this weekend.
