ONLY ON 3: Charter school considered option for vocation school in Brunswick Co.

READ MORE:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Members of the Brunswick County School Board say for years they've talked about opening a career tech charter school. Now they're looking at a different way to possibly pay for it.

Shirley Babson has been on the school board for more than 20 years. She says there is a need for a technical school in the county.

Babson says this plan is the infancy stage and will take some time to evolve. She estimates that 60 percent of students would use a charter or career school.

School board members says this is something that has been discussed for about 10 years, but was just recently brought up again by a member of the community. This time, though, the idea is possibly to build it as a charter school.

"Somebody else called me one day about a month ago and asked me if I'd think I would be interested in a vocational... I mean career tech charter school, and I first said, 'I am not sure, because I am an elected member of the public school system,'" Babson said.

Babson says she notified the superintendent about her involvement.

Charter schools are not controlled by the school board, but they do get public funding.

School Board Chair Charlie Miller says he'd rather the school be built as part of the district. He says doing it as a charter school is just one option some people are exploring.
