Sadly, this couple is in the right place to sell their crack cocaine and heroin. Elizabethtown, county seat of Bladen County, one of the poorest counties in the state, has a complacent attitude toward poverty. Elizabethtown's leadership will not allow any businesses to come in that would "compete with the town's own established family businesses."

Bladen County is a wretched backwater, and half the population feels a sense of hopelessness about their futures. The county is doing nothing to recruit industry and business.

The poor get poorer, and the rich--yes, there are a few rich people in Bladen--get richer and more callous.

Young people from poor families, with few skills and no opportunities, turn to drugs to make their lives tolerable.

Bladen County is truly a miserable place to live, and its leadership seems determined to make sure Bladen's poor citizens continue to experience nothing but misery and hopelessness.
