Wright Memorial Bridge on NC coast to get upgrade

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The westbound lanes of the Wright Memorial Bridge from the Outer Banks are getting a $6.3 million upgrade.

The N.C. Department of Transportation announced Friday that plans call for the bridge to be resurfaced with a latex-modified concrete that will provide a smooth riding surface. In addition, expansion joints on the bridge will have their seals replaced during the project.

Because of the nature of the preservation work, the latex-modified concrete overlay will take place only when air temperatures are between 50 and 85 degrees, surface temperatures are between 40 and 85 degrees, and wind speeds are no greater than 10 miles per hour.

Two-way traffic will be shifted to the eastbound bridge. Work can begin as early as Sept. 15, with the bridge reopening to traffic next May.
