WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- An organization collected buses-full of school supplies for those who cannot afford them.
Volunteers for the “Stuff the Bus” campaign were working diligently just inside of the Wal-Mart at Monkey Junction today giving out wish lists of supplies needed to shoppers, in hopes they would return with donations.
Marrio Jeter, program manager of Communities in Schools of Cape Fear says they made about $80,000 in supplies and donations last year, but they are hoping this year's bounty tops that.
“It's been a tremendous outpouring; it’s been a tremendous effort from the community,” Jeter said. “I don't know if everyone is capitalizing on the fact that this is the last tax free weekend. But there's a wonderful concerted effort from the community to come and give.”
All donated items will be given to counselors and social workers in New Hanover and Pender counties, who will distribute them to students in need.
